Whiskey is high in alcohol, which raises uric acid and can trigger painful gout flares. Club soda adds no significant benefit.
Whiskey and soda combines distilled spirits with carbonated water. The soda component is gout-neutral — plain club soda contains no purines, fructose, or added sugar. The primary concern is the whiskey itself. Alcohol, including spirits, is a well-recognized gout trigger: it raises serum uric acid both by increasing purine breakdown and by reducing the kidneys' ability to excrete uric acid. Beer is often singled out due to yeast-derived purines, but spirits are not exempt — research consistently shows both beer and liquor independently increase gout flare risk, with spirits roughly doubling the odds of an attack.
If you choose to drink, keep it to a small amount — no more than one serving — and match each drink with a glass of water to support hydration and uric acid clearance. Avoid alcohol entirely during an active flare, and skip sugary mixers, which add a second uric-acid-raising mechanism through fructose. For most people managing gout, whiskey and soda is best reserved for rare occasions or avoided altogether, since even moderate intake can trigger recurrent attacks and complicate long-term urate control.
