A high-risk mix of alcohol and sugary cola; both raise uric acid and trigger flares.
Whiskey and Cola combines two ingredients that independently raise uric acid: alcohol and high-sugar cola. Neither contains significant purines, so the risk here is metabolic rather than dietary purine load.
Whiskey is a distilled spirit — lower in purines than beer — but alcohol in any form increases uric acid production and reduces the kidneys' ability to excrete it. Even moderate spirit consumption is a well-established trigger for gout attacks.
Regular cola is sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup or sugar. Fructose is metabolized rapidly, depleting ATP and generating uric acid as a byproduct, directly raising serum urate. Sugar-sweetened beverages are consistently associated with higher gout incidence in large cohort studies.
Because alcohol and fructose act through different pathways, their effects are additive — making this drink especially flare-prone. A typical serving (1.5 oz whiskey with 8 oz cola) delivers a substantial sugar dose plus alcohol.
Avoid this drink entirely during flares or when urate is elevated. If you do drink, use diet cola to eliminate fructose, limit yourself to one drink, and alternate with water. For safer options, choose unsweetened tea, sparkling water, or skip alcohol altogether.
