Mixing vodka with energy drinks is a risky choice for gout; this cocktail combines alcohol and sugary caffeine.
Vodka and energy drink is a popular highball cocktail made by mixing vodka with a caffeinated energy drink, usually served over ice [2]. Versions such as Vodka Monster use the same formula with a different energy drink brand [1]. For people with gout, this combination is one of the least favorable choices.
Alcohol promotes uric acid production while reducing its excretion through the kidneys, directly raising the risk of a gout flare. Many energy drinks are sweetened with sugar or high-fructose corn syrup, and fructose metabolism increases uric acid levels. The caffeine in energy drinks can also contribute to dehydration, making urate crystals more likely to form. Because caffeine masks the sedative effects of alcohol, people often drink more than intended, increasing both gout risk and general health dangers.
There is no serving size that is genuinely safe for gout. If someone chooses to drink, the safest approach is to avoid this cocktail entirely. Water and unsweetened, non-alcoholic alternatives are better choices for hydration and uric acid control.
