Vada

With moderation

Vada (also known as wada, vadai) is a deep-fried Indian snack made primarily from lentils (such as urad dal or chana dal). While the lentils themselves are plant-based and moderate in purines, the deep-frying process adds unhealthy saturated/trans fats and calories. For gout management, portion control is key — a small serving occasionally is acceptable, but frequent consumption may increase inflammation risk due to the high-fat cooking method and potential weight gain, which exacerbates gout.

Good

Lentils used in vada are plant-based and contain moderate purines (less problematic than animal purines). They also provide fiber and some beneficial nutrients like folate and magnesium.

Bad

Deep-frying in oil introduces inflammatory fats, increases calorie density, and may promote weight gain — a major gout risk factor. Excess oil can also raise triglycerides and worsen metabolic health.
