Leafy green low in purines that supports healthy uric acid levels.
Turnip greens are an excellent choice for people with gout. As a leafy green vegetable, they contain very low purine levels, and purines from plant sources are not associated with increased gout risk the way animal-based purines are. They are rich in vitamin C, which promotes the excretion of uric acid through the kidneys and can help lower serum urate levels over time.
The greens are also packed with antioxidants like beta-carotene and flavonoids, which may help counter the oxidative stress and inflammation that accompany gout flares. Their high fiber content and low calorie count support weight management, a key factor in reducing gout risk since excess weight raises uric acid production and reduces excretion.
Steaming or light sautéing preserves nutrients best. Avoid cooking turnip greens with fatty pork, ham hocks, or bacon drippings, as the animal fats and meat purines can undermine their gout-friendly nature. They pair well with lemon juice, which adds even more vitamin C.
Turnip greens are relatively high in oxalates. While this does not affect gout itself, people who also have a history of calcium oxalate kidney stones should moderate intake and stay well hydrated. For most gout patients, there is no need to restrict turnip greens — they can be enjoyed freely as part of a balanced, low-purine diet.
