Turkey is a moderate-purine poultry. Enjoy in controlled portions as a lean protein choice for gout management.
Turkey falls into the moderate-purine category of poultry. While it contains less purine than organ meats, sardines, and fatty red meats, it still contributes meaningfully to uric acid production and should not be treated as a free food in a gout diet.
White breast meat with the skin removed is the leanest option and contains fewer purines than dark meat, which is more metabolically active and richer in both fat and purines. Processed turkey products — such as sausages, bacon, and deli slices — add saturated fat, sodium, and fillers that can worsen gout over time, so fresh cuts are the better choice.
A sensible serving is about 85–115 g (3–4 oz) of cooked turkey, roughly the size of a deck of cards. Roasting, baking, or grilling without added oils keeps the meal gout-friendly. Pair turkey with low-purine sides like vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. Because all animal proteins raise uric acid to some degree, alternate turkey with plant proteins and low-fat dairy across the week, and stay well hydrated to help your kidneys clear uric acid.
