Sweet potatoes are a nutrient-dense, low-purine carbohydrate that can be part of a gout-friendly diet.
Sweet potatoes are a gout-friendly carbohydrate because they are low in purines, unlike organ meats and certain seafoods that are common flare triggers. Their fiber, potassium, and vitamin C content support overall metabolic health, which matters for people managing gout. Vitamin C may modestly help lower uric acid levels, though sweet potatoes should not be treated as a replacement for prescribed gout medication.
Boiling, steaming, or baking sweet potatoes with the skin on preserves nutrients and keeps the meal simple. Watch portion size, as a large sweet potato still delivers a substantial amount of carbohydrate and calories. Pair it with lean protein and non-starchy vegetables rather than butter, cheese, or creamy sauces. Avoid sweet potato fries, which are often deep-fried in oil and salted heavily, and skip candied versions loaded with brown sugar and marshmallows. These additions introduce excess fat, sodium, and added sugar that can undermine gout management and contribute to weight gain. For most people with gout, a medium sweet potato as part of a balanced meal is a safe and nutritious choice.
