Alcoholic cocktail with gin and sugar; alcohol raises uric acid and risk.
The Sloe Gin Fizz is a sweet cocktail made with sloe gin (a liqueur flavored with sloe berries), fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, and often topped with club soda or sparkling water. For people with gout, this drink is best avoided.
Alcohol is a major trigger for gout attacks. It increases uric acid production and reduces its excretion by the kidneys, and gin (like other spirits) is associated with higher gout risk. The added simple syrup adds fructose and sucrose, which can also raise uric acid levels and contribute to insulin resistance, worsening gout over time. Even though the citrus juice provides some vitamin C, the amount is small and does not offset the alcohol and sugar load.
If you are at a social event, consider a non-alcoholic sparkling water with lemon or lime instead. A single serving occasionally may be acceptable for some, but for those with frequent flares or elevated urate levels, it is safest to skip this drink entirely. Always stay hydrated with water and focus on a low-purine, low-sugar diet.
