Seven And Seven

The Seven and Seven is a classic highball made with Seagram's Seven Crown blended whiskey and 7 Up lemon-lime soda [3]. This combination is problematic for gout because alcohol—especially spirits—increases uric acid production while also impairing the kidneys' ability to excrete uric acid [3]. At the same time, regular lemon-lime soda is rich in sugar or high-fructose corn syrup, and fructose metabolism directly raises uric acid [2][1]. Depending on the recipe, a single serving can contain roughly 150–200 grams of carbohydrates and 600–900 calories, largely from added sugar [2]. That much liquid sugar may spike insulin, reduce uric acid clearance, and contribute to weight gain—a major gout risk factor [2]. Even if you switch to a diet mixer, the alcohol alone is enough to keep this in the "unsafe" category for most people with gout [3]. If you do choose to drink, stick to no more than one serving, use a diet lemon-lime soda, alternate with water, and eat a balanced meal beforehand [1]. Because alcohol and sugar together strongly raise flare risk, most gout specialists recommend avoiding the Seven and Seven entirely [2][3].
