Potato Sticks

With moderation

Potato sticks (flavored) are made from potatoes that are deep-fried or baked, then salted or seasoned. Potatoes themselves are low in purines and generally safe for gout. However, flavored potato sticks often contain added sodium, saturated fats, and sometimes high-fructose corn syrup or other added sugars (common in flavored coatings). High sodium can increase blood pressure and kidney stress, potentially interfering with uric acid excretion. The fat content may contribute to obesity and inflammation, which are risk factors for gout flares. The primary risk comes from the flavorings and processing rather than the potato base.

Good

Potatoes themselves are low in purines, so the base ingredient does not raise uric acid levels significantly.

Bad

High sodium content (can impair kidney function and uric acid excretion), added sugars in some flavored varieties (fructose raises uric acid), and high saturated fat (promotes inflammation and weight gain). Seasonings like yeast extract or MSG may be high in purines. Portion size is important—large servings can contribute to obesity, a key gout risk factor.
