A Michelada is a beer-based cocktail with lime, spices, and often tomato or clamato juice. The beer makes it a major gout
A Michelada is a Mexican cocktail built on beer, mixed with lime juice, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and spices, often served in a salt-rimmed glass. Many versions also include tomato juice or Clamato (a blend of tomato and clam broth).
The decisive problem is the beer base. Beer carries a double burden: its yeast content provides highly absorbable purines (especially guanosine), and its alcohol both increases uric acid production and reduces its excretion by the kidneys. Studies consistently identify beer as the alcoholic beverage most strongly linked to gout flares, even in modest amounts.
The accompaniments add further concerns. Salt-rimmed glasses and salty sauces can stress kidney function, which matters for gout patients who often have impaired uric acid clearance. If Clamato is used, the clam broth introduces shellfish-derived purines that can compound the risk. Tomato juice, while low in purines, has been associated with higher uric acid levels in some observational research, and hot sauces may irritate a sensitive stomach alongside alcohol.
There is no safe portion of a Michelada for someone managing gout — even one glass could trigger a flare. If you want a similar flavor experience, consider a non-alcoholic alternative using sparkling water, lime, tomato juice, and spices, which avoids the purine and alcohol load entirely. During a flare, skip it altogether.
