Limes are safe for people with gout because they are very low in purines (which break down into uric acid). Additionally, limes are rich in vitamin C and citric acid, both of which may help lower serum uric acid levels. Vitamin C promotes urinary excretion of uric acid, and citric acid can help alkalize urine, supporting uric acid elimination. Limes are also hydrating and provide antioxidants with anti-inflammatory properties. There is no purine concern with limes. Gout sufferers can enjoy raw limes freely—added to water, used in dressings, or squeezed over meals—without worrying about triggering a flare. However, be mindful if consuming lime in high-sugar preparations (like limeade or sweetened drinks), as added sugar and especially fructose can raise uric acid.
