Raw grapefruit is safe for people with gout. It is a low-purine fruit with a high water content that helps promote uric acid excretion through urine. Grapefruit is also rich in vitamin C, which has been shown to help lower serum uric acid levels in some studies. However, grapefruit (and grapefruit juice) can interfere with the metabolism of certain medications, including colchicine — a common gout treatment. If you take any prescription gout medications, check with your doctor before adding grapefruit to your diet.
