Cinnamon Roll

Cinnamon rolls are a sweet pastry made from enriched wheat flour, butter, sugar, and often a cream cheese frosting — a classic combination like Cinnabon's warm dough with cream cheese frosting [2], or Sugarbloom's version with enriched unbleached flour, eggs, butter, and cream cheese [1]. The good news for gout sufferers is that the main ingredients are low in purines, so a cinnamon roll won't directly spike uric acid the way organ meats or shellfish would. However, the high sugar content is the real concern. Added sugars, especially fructose, increase uric acid production in the body, and a typical roll packs a hefty dose — Lidl's version contains 400 calories per roll [5], while a glazed cinnamon bun can reach around 500 calories [3]. The refined white flour also causes a rapid blood sugar and insulin spike, which can reduce the kidneys' ability to excrete uric acid. The butter and cream cheese frosting add saturated fat, which may further impair uric acid clearance over time. Portion size matters: a standard single roll (about 110g [1]) is a reasonable occasional treat, but jumbo bakery versions can be 12 ounces or more [4]. If you enjoy one, pair it with a protein-rich meal, drink plenty of water, and keep it as an occasional indulgence rather than a regular breakfast. Consider a homemade version using whole-grain flour and less sugar for a more gout-friendly alternative.
