Chicken is a moderate-purine protein. Enjoy it in sensible portions — white meat is the safer choice.
Chicken sits in the middle of the gout-friendly protein spectrum. It has fewer purines than beef, pork, or lamb, but more than most dairy products, eggs, or plant proteins. For people with gout, the key is choosing the right cut and cooking method.
Opt for skinless chicken breast, which is the leanest and lowest-purine portion. Bake, grill, boil, or roast it without heavy marinades, breading, or frying — fried chicken adds unhealthy fats that can worsen inflammation and insulin resistance, both of which raise uric acid levels.
Dark meat (thighs and drumsticks) and chicken skin contain more purines than breast meat, so keep those portions small. Avoid chicken organ meats entirely — liver and gizzards are very high in purines and are a well-known gout trigger.
A sensible serving is roughly the size of your palm (about 85–115 g). Eating chicken several times a week is fine, but rotating with lower-purine proteins like eggs, low-fat dairy, or tofu can help keep uric acid steady. Stay well hydrated when eating chicken, since adequate fluid intake helps your kidneys excrete uric acid.
If you have frequent flares, consider tracking how your body responds to chicken — some people are more sensitive to poultry purines than others.
