Canned cooked tomatoes are low-purine and generally gout-safe. Choose no-salt-added or low-sodium varieties to limit kidney strain.
Canned cooked tomatoes — whether diced, crushed, or pureed — are a low-purine food and generally safe for people with gout. The main gout benefit comes from their vitamin C content, which has been linked to modest lowering of serum uric acid. They also provide potassium, which supports healthy kidney function and uric acid excretion.
The biggest concerns with canned tomatoes are added ingredients, not the tomatoes themselves. Many standard canned varieties include significant added salt, which can raise blood pressure and strain the kidneys — a particular worry since gout already stresses renal function. Some seasoned or flavored products also contain added sugar, which can increase uric acid production.
Some older claims link tomatoes (a nightshade) to gout flares, but the evidence is weak. Tomatoes are very low in purines and are not considered a trigger by major gout guidelines. If you've personally noticed flares after eating tomato-heavy meals, keep a food diary and test your individual response, but most people with gout can enjoy canned cooked tomatoes without issue.
A standard half-cup serving of plain canned tomatoes is a reasonable portion. Avoid consuming large amounts of heavily salted or sweetened tomato sauces regularly, as their additives — not the tomatoes — create the main gout risk.
