Candied Sweet Potatoes

What it is

Candied sweet potatoes are a classic holiday side made from sweet potatoes simmered or baked with butter, brown sugar, and often marshmallows or syrup. A typical serving supplies roughly 243–290 calories, with carbohydrates making up the largest share (around 55 g per serving) and butter contributing much of the fat [1][2].

Gout considerations

For people with gout, the sweet potato itself is a reasonably friendly base: it's a moderate-purine vegetable, and its potassium, vitamin C, and fiber content can support the kidneys' excretion of uric acid. The concern lies in the preparation. These recipes depend on generous amounts of added sugar — brown sugar, granulated sugar, or syrup — and butter. Added sugars, especially those rich in fructose, can raise serum uric acid by accelerating purine breakdown and reducing renal clearance. Butter adds saturated fat and calories, which matters mainly because excess body weight is a known trigger for gout flares.

Practical guidance

Enjoy candied sweet potatoes as a small side dish rather than a mainstay. Portion control is key: a modest half-cup serving a few times a year is reasonable, especially when uric acid is well-managed and the rest of the meal is low in purines. A lighter version with less sugar or a sugar substitute avoids the uric acid spike while keeping the flavor. Staying hydrated and skipping other high-purine foods in the same meal helps offset the treat.
