Bitter melon is a low-purine, low-fructose vegetable that can be safely enjoyed by people with gout.
Bitter melon (Momordica charantia) is a tropical vegetable commonly used in Asian and Indian cuisines. It is low in purines, so it does not significantly contribute to uric acid production. It is also low in fructose, avoiding the gout risk associated with sugary foods. Some studies suggest bitter melon may help lower blood sugar, which could be beneficial for those with diabetes, a common comorbidity of gout. However, if you are on diabetes medication, monitor blood sugar closely as bitter melon may have additive effects. Enjoy it cooked or in stir-fries, but be mindful of preparation methods—avoid adding high-purine ingredients like shrimp or excessive oil. Overall, bitter melon is a safe and nutritious addition to a gout-friendly diet.
