A low-purine, nutrient-dense vegetable that is generally safe and even beneficial for gout when prepared simply.
Baked sweet potato is a solid choice for people with gout. It is naturally low in purines, so it does not directly raise uric acid levels the way red meat, organ meats, or shellfish do. Its vitamin C content may help moderately lower serum uric acid, and its potassium supports healthy kidney function, which aids uric acid excretion.
The main gout risk comes not from the potato itself but from how it is prepared. A plain baked sweet potato is excellent, but sweet potato casseroles loaded with brown sugar, marshmallows, honey, or maple syrup introduce significant added fructose — a known trigger for uric acid spikes. Keep toppings minimal: a sprinkle of cinnamon, a drizzle of olive oil, or a small pat of butter is fine in moderation.
Portion control still matters. Sweet potatoes are a starchy carbohydrate; very large servings can cause an insulin response, and insulin reduces uric acid excretion by the kidneys. A medium baked sweet potato (about 100–150 g cooked) is a reasonable single serving.
For most people with gout, a baked sweet potato can be a regular part of the diet — it is more nutrient-dense and has a lower glycemic index than white potatoes, making it a smart swap for a starchy side.
