Alcoholic Fruit Punch

Alcoholic fruit punch is a high-risk drink for people with gout because it combines two major triggers: alcohol and fructose. Alcohol, especially in the amounts typically used in punch recipes (1–2 cups of vodka, rum, or tequila per pitcher ), increases uric acid production and reduces its excretion by the kidneys. At the same time, the fruit juices and sodas in the punch are rich in fructose, which is metabolized into uric acid and can also raise insulin resistance, further impairing uric acid clearance. A standard serving of alcoholic fruit punch contains about 148 calories and 15.71 g of carbohydrates, mostly from sugar [1]. Even a single serving can push uric acid levels up, and the combination of alcohol and fructose has a synergistic effect, making the flare risk higher than either alone. For people with gout, the safest choice is to avoid alcoholic fruit punch entirely. If you are at a party, opt for water, unsweetened iced tea, or a non-alcoholic punch made with low-sugar, whole fruit and no added syrups. If you do choose to drink, limit alcohol to one drink and avoid punches with high-fructose corn syrup or concentrated juices, but be aware that even moderate amounts can trigger a flare.
